Urban Soils City Transect

Fall 2022
Collaboration with Melody Stein
Work in Residence, Urban Soils Institute / Swale House
Governors Island, New York, NY
A forthcoming project as part of the Urban Soils Institute/Swale House residency. The project is an experiential investigation of urban soils along a sectional transect through New York City. Presented through multimedia collage, the section drawing is interactive and educational, wrapping multiple walls of the Swale House space on Governors Island and includes core samples, materials, images, and site documentation gathered at sample points located every three miles along a section cut line.

The use of collage as a methodology organizes scalar and non-scalar information and draws parallels between above-surface conditions and the soils beneath while crafting narrative and encouraging engagement. The transect illustration becomes a didactic illustration of the embedded presence of a living soil substrate underpinning life in the city.

The project is a collaboration between Angela Moreno-Long and Melody Stein. Angela combines her background in City Planning and Landscape Architecture to bring an intersectional understanding of social, ecological, and urban conditions of neighborhoods and the soils they’re built upon. Melody is a licensed Landscape Architect with a background in Fine Art and Biological Sciences which enriches her understanding of the technical, biological, and poetic implications of designed urban soils.
